As the management of upland path erosion is such a practical matter, study visits provide valuable learning.
In September 2013, a group of 12 people made a four-day study visit to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales to gain an insight into the work done on the management of upland paths in these two areas. The visit also addressed wider recreation management issues.
The study group looked at a number of different sites with staff from the Fix the Fells project in the Lake District National Park and the team in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. These two areas were chosen to enable the group see erosion management on a variety of terrain including peatland.
The Helping the Hills seminar on 14th November 2013 was arranged to disseminate the findings from the study visit, and to discuss how the Helping the Hills initiative can continue to promote good practice in the management of upland paths.
